Audition Notice: MAMAK MEE-AH! - THE MUSICAL SPOOF

MAMAK MEE-AH! - THE MUSICAL SPOOF AUDITIONS DATES

7pm to 11pm Monday October 12th, 2009 @ STUDIO 2 KLPac, Sentul Park

7pm to 11pm Tuesday October 13th, 2009 @ STUDIO 2 KLPac, Sentul Park

Auditions will be maximum 10 minutes. At the audition, the panel will want to hear you sing, and see how you act and move. In addition to your song, please prepare a short one to two minute monologue to deliver in the character for which you are auditioning. Or adlib on the audition day if you prefer. Bring your own props/costume. You will also need to be able demonstrate some skill in movement and a decent sense of rhythm. Bring your music and show us your dance!

IMPORTANT!!Auditionees MUST sing a song that has been featured in a staged musical. This helps the panel of judges to gauge your suitability for the show and the role. Better if you can sing one of the songs that the character for which you are auditioning sings in Mamak Mee-Ah.

SUGGESTIONS Whilst the production team will video the auditions, do please try to bring a Theatre Biodata or CV or Press Kit or something that helps the panel to remember you. Previous experience shows that those who did got the gig over those that didn't.

We have the backing music for all the songs in the show, but if you have your own CD Backing music do please feel free to use it for the audition. If you have sheet music, please bring a keyboard player with you. And a keyboard. And an amplifier.

Ninety percent of success comes from showing up. Try to think about your strengths and what you see that you could bring to the show and the character.

There are only ten spots available. Not everyone will get one. Us saying no does not mean failure, just that you don't appear to have what we see the show needing at this time. Brian McIntyre will call everyone with a decision within two weeks.

But bear in mind that things can change. Initial cast selections occasionally drop out and strong second choices then get the call and the gig. Remember there is always a long term. If not this show, then maybe the next. Stay positive.

CONTACT To book your audition slot, please contact Dylan at 017 3338916 or email dylanctl@hotmail.com. Please also advise Dylan which character you want to audition for.
Looking forward to seeing what you've got!!

The Land Below The Wind: Final Stop for BPLL National Tour 2008

If it wasn't because of the rain, we would have had the chance to go to the island trip on our final day in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. I was looking forward for it so much but to just "berserah" to the weather that don't seem to stop from the day we arrived in KK.

Now, should anyone ask if I have had any local speciality food, I will say, I only manage to try the local "Kon Lau Mehn" (Dry Wonton Noodles) at Lintas, KK. Other than that, good seafood at the Gardens nearby KKIA.

We were staying in Best Western Courtyard, One Borneo, huge shopping complex. I can safely say in my personal opinion, it feels like equivalent walking in any major shopping complexes in the Klang Valley. It has the feel of the 1-Utama new wing.

UMS' Recital Hall was very challenging to us. Having to perform with minimal sets, last minute feedback monitors and slippery floors, I must say we have done quite a decent job. The organizers were very hospitable too. They feed us with really good food particularly the homecooked seafood at Datuk Adeline Leong's residence. Thank you Datuk Adeline, whom has been very kind to me when I was ill. I mean, over all, she really make sure that everything has been taken care off, our lodging, and all sorts. My profound and deepest appreciation to Datuk and her team for such a wonderful stay in KK.

I really missed those kids from IEC that attended our 2.5 hours Musical Theatre workshop. All of them are so bright and full with energy. They watched our matinee show and stayed back to meet us. We miss them dearly. Now some of us are connected via Facebook too! Yay! Probably in a swift of a blink of an eye, those kids turns out to be real performer on stage, larger than life and successful if they want to be.

Thank you all for watching the show. We hope you have a blast and time of your life enjoying our little nonsense on stage.

Thank you for supporting Malaysian Theatre.

Workshop @ IEC, KK, Sabah

The Cast Members of Broadway Parodies Lagi Lah had the opportunities to share some tips on how to be a performing artist. We conducted a short 2 hours debrief of Acting, Singing & Dancing in the said event which was attended by more than 20 students from various backgrounds.

The flight to KK was about 2.5 hours and we were already wet traveling from the lobby to our coach because buses are not allowed to pick up passengers from the lobby. Anyway, their lobby is beautiful. The rooms are not too bad too.

Our next technical run is on Friday night. Show is on Saturday. Do come and watch us performing in KK!

For the kids who attended our workshop on Thursday afternoon, we hope you guys have enjoyed and take back some learnings from us.

Review: Musical A Runaway Success

The Star Metro: Thursday October 16, 2008

Musical a runaway successs

Story and photos by ANTHONY LAW

THE musical, Broadway Parodies Lagi Lah, staged by the Actors Studio at Taman Budaya in Ipoh was a runaway success.

The performers, who presented a series of hilarious songs, kept the audience entertained with their two-hour non-stop performance.

The event provided a good opportunity for Ipoh folk to meet talented personalities like Farah Sulaiman, Ho Soon Yoon, Glamorique Arshad, Keith Yew, Mia Palencia, Shahila Johan, Tabitha Kong, Janet Lee, Sham Sunder Binwani, Sarah Low, Zeqthy Nattrah Ramli, Lim Ang Swee, John Siew, Loi Chin Yu and Edna Tan.

Sham Sunder, who virtually stole the show with his hugely versatile role, said it was a great experience to perform in front of a receptive audience.

“It gives us encouragement to perform even better,” Sham Sunder said after the performance recently.

He added that he and his group practised for seven weeks for the musical which was organised by the Perak Society of Performing Arts (PSPA).

Production designer Edna Tan said while it was a challenging experience to perform before the Ipoh audience, the wonderful response was really an “ego booster” for her.

“It was a sort of ego trip for me to perform as I was just stepping in to take the place of another member who was not available,” said Tan who took on the role of a rich Datin going on a shopping spree in the musical.

She added that she did not find any difficulty following the group throughout the performance.
Palencia, who was a lead performer, said it was very challenging to perform in front of an entirely different audience.

She said the Taman Budaya theatre was an excellent venue for her to get intimate with the audience because of its small size which meant that the spectators sat nearer to the stage.

“I enjoy every moment of the show and obviously I could see they are hanging on to the words I said and sang. They were laughing throughout the show,” Palencia said.

Kong, who kept the audience entertained with her humorous role by singing Good Morning Towels to the tune of Good Morning Starshine, said it was a wonderful feeling to be performing before an enthusiastic crowd.

Kong had been singing gospel for eight years and her great love for musical theatre attracted her to turn full time in performing arts. Prior to this, she worked as a brand manager in an advertising company.

“Wow! It is wonderful to appear in Ipoh which is such a close community and a good neighbourhood to be in,” Kong said.

PSPA president Datin Rosalina Ooi said the society decided to bring the show to Ipoh to expose the local folk to the performing arts.

Thank You JB!

Yay! We have completed our run in Johore Bahru. Thank you for being such sporting audience!

The food in JB is not too bad either. I heard that there are good choices around at the Taman Pelangi side! Our JB trip was a short one. Hence, could not explore more but just to get ourselves ready for the performances.

JOTIC was quite interesting. Halfway through the play, we were greeted by the JOTIC Youth Orchestra. We were on our way to the main door for the 2nd half and they were playing "Love Story". Pretty amazing, I must say considering most of them are still in their teens.

We stayed in The Embassy Hotel, lovely hotel. No complaints at all!

Our next stop is Kota Kinabalu (KK), Sabah, Negeri Di Bawah Bayu.

We will be conducting workshop a day before the show. So, do watch out for information from your local contact person.

Curtain Call

Look what I found on Youtube... haha, ada orang curi curi record the curtain call...

Anyway, glad you have enjoyed watching the show!

the journey ahead....

well...we've done all our 10shows in KLpac and eagerly await for our tour next week...1st stop, Ipoh, then Penang, Johor and lastly Kota Kinabalu... so whoever hadn't had the chance to catch our show in KLpac, hurry hurry go go go buy tickets...your in for a treat!

its been great working with such talent Tria Aziz and Janet Lee who eventually won't be joining us for our tour journey but their laughter and bullying method will always remain in our hearts.

As for the rest, Soon Yoon, Keith, Sham, Glam, Sarah, Tabby, Mia, Zeqhty, myself(Shahila) and our additional cast Edna will surely do our best to bring the best show that we can. Along with Brian, Shalu, Eva, Ann, Naz, John and Boon, they will make sure that the show will run smoothly like it did in KLpac...

we'll be having a final rehearsal before the tour on the 5th of October 2008 just to brush up what we've left aside during raya this week (you'd probably be seeing the BIGGER and WIDER looking cast of BPLL on tour after a week of ketupat and lemangs). :p

so feel free to drop us some comments and do tell ur about your expactation of us during the show so that we'll be prepare to give you the best show that we can...

cheers!

much love,

Shahila Johan

The Unsung Heroes

The run of BPLL in KLPac has finally come to an end. A great thank you for all of you who came for the show, some even watched it more than twice – please take a double, triple hats off from all of us! The show wouldn't have stayed open till scheduled closing without your support.

Okay, this may NOT be true 'cause we've booked the venue so we die-die-we-must-stay throughout the entire duration. But we must confess: every night before the show opened we did peeped at the backstage monitor to see the crowd, worried that audience might:

a) gave up driving in a jam
b) police road blocks along Jalan Ipoh
c) early Raya out-of-town holidays
d)
fong-fei-kei
e) all of the above

f) other (please specify) ____________________________ reason(s).

An empty theatre is a taboo: so you get the message, sincerely from us – your presence at the audience seat, a silent smile in your heart; or even the lightest dutiful applause, have motivated all us to keep the show going every night.

In one of a few chain emails circulated amongst the cast members lately, one message from Soon Yoon gave me a harsh reminder: We tend to always thank the directors, playwrights, producers or choreographers, very often enough we steal the light away from the production crew. So the next half of the entry is for them: the Unsung Heroes of Broadway Parodies Lagi Lah!

Lim Ang Swee lighting designer
John Siew sound engineer
Loi Chin Yu
set builder

Dominique Divorsine
costume designer
Shalini Kalimuthu stage manager, publicist
Jasmine Tham production manager
Ian Chow
theatre manager
Michael Thomas
production manager

Mohd. Nazri Osman
lighting operator

Ooi Yit Boon
sound operator

Seshadri Kalimuthu
PA to executive producer

Eva Wong
assistant stage manager

Ramon Matthew Singho
front-of-house manager
Shangari Subramaniam
administrator

Suresh Rasammanikam (TAS)
Farah Diana (KLPac) box office supervisors

...feeling more guilty now as I'm quoting the names shamelessly out from the programme, I hardly know half of them!

My personal thanks would be to
Shalini Kalimuthu 'Shalu' & Eva for handling almost everything backstage yet constantly got yelled at when props didn't come on stage on cue. Hats off to both of them as I had underestimated how heavy those panels were until I had to haul one all by myself! Cheers to girl power.

Also to
Boon who constantly shines the light on our faces, literally, every time before we went on stage to check that our microphones were in place. Especially for those whose microphones hate their owners - namely Shahila and myself, we owe you a big thank you and this one is for you!

Not to forget Ann Chung, the wardrobe assistant, whose one of the name didn't make it to the program. She picks up everybody's sweaty, dirty, smelly laundry... ahem, to word it nicely – she ensures we have clean, crisp costume before every show. She stations to ensure there's no room for wardrobe mulfuction, especially for Sham's oh-so-fabulous Sari. I sincerely wish to appologise on behalf of Glamo for asking her to wash his (smelly) socks. Eek. Please don't do that to Ann anymore, okay? Be nice or she'll make a Janet-Jackson's-halftime-show-at-the-Super-Bowl out of you. *Bomoh's evil laugh*

Also there are lots of other names did not even make it to the booklet, like the team at the souvenir booth who greeted all of us everynight as we sneak passed the crowd during intermission; those sweet girls at the door who wishes us to break another leg, eventhough after two shows we all ran out of legs to break; the gribs and best boy technicians who fanatically trailed Tria and the bomoh with follow spots; also those who worked answering phone calls from customers negotiating for more discounts over the boxoffice... the list goes on and on.

To those who will not join us for the tour, we hope to be able to work with all of you in many many projects in the future.

Sekian, terima kasih.

Shop! Shop! Shop!

There is a scene in "Shop! Shop! Shop" (from the Student Prince) whereby "Toh Puan Chow Mai Fan" (played by Tabitha Kong) officiate an opening ceremony of the shop. Since I was like the "guard" of the place, I was also in charge of taking pictures for the "VIPs" every night in the song. I use my own personal Nikon Coolpix S9 to snap the scene while Tabitha is still singing.

Take a look at the photos below. All of the photos were taken every night during act 2 on different days. Everyday, I will take 2 shots, can you guess which is which day?

Talents on display in Broadway Parodies Lagi-Lah

By AMY DE KANTER

If you’re looking for a brilliant night of music, dance and laughter, watch Broadway Parodies Lagi-Lah.

If you watched Broadway Parodies Lah last year, watch it again this year. If it’s new to you, you are in for a rollicking treat.

If the title of the show is not self-explanatory enough for you, it is a collection of songs about Malaysian life set to the tunes of Broadway hits and a couple of Disney movie tracks too. Hi Ho from Snow White becomes a Malaysian’s plaintive cry Aiyo! while Tomorrow from the musical Annie answers the nationally asked €“ and answered - question: When am I going to get paid?

Shows in Malaysia, even great ones, rarely show for more than a few weeks. If you don’t catch it when it’s here, that’s it. So you know there must be something special about Broadway Parodies Lagi Lah which has returned this year not only to a bigger stage and theatre, but also to a nationwide tour which will start after it finishes its run in Kuala Lumpur.

This year’s Broadway Parodies Lagi Lah! has a brilliant new cast and is complete with dance routines,

I caught and enjoyed Broadway Parodies Lah which sold out for all performances last year at the Actor’s Studio in Bangsar, KL.

While a couple of the songs fell flat, the vast majority were hits and I wondered whether this next generation of actors would be able to step into the shoes of last years’ crowd-pulling names like Douglas Lim and Joanne Kam Poh Poh.

They do. In fact, in many ways, this performance improved on last year’s.

The stage at KLPac Pentas 1 is much larger than the one in Bangsar, but the actors fill it beautifully, due largely to Farah Sulaiman’s lively choreography. Last year, numbers like I Like to Stay in Malaysia (sung to America from West Side Story) and We Must Play Golf All Night (to, of course, I Could Have Danced All Night from My Fair Lady) needed dancers. This year, they have them.

The overall feel of Broadway Parodies Lagi Lah is a lot more like the big musicals it borrows from, with costumes, lighting, sets and even slideshows.

Two of the best-received numbers of the first act were performed by relative newcomers Keith Yew and Shahila Johan. Dancer Yew showed that he also excels in singing with Marina (Maria from West Side Story) - an ode to Marina Mahathir; and Shahila played a pampered girl worrying about the prospect of being drafted into the National Service (I am Seventeen, Going on Eighteen from the almost similarly named favourite from The Sound of Music).

If there were to be one complaint about the show, it would be the same one I had last year. In some numbers with three or more singers, it is near impossible to make out the words. This year, the show makes up for it with slideshows, costumes, props and dancing to keep us entertained whereas last year, all we could do was strain hopelessly to hear what we could only assume was as funny and insightful as all the other songs.

Luckily, most songs are done as solos or duets and writer Brian McIntyre’s hilarious lyrics come across loud and clear.

The second act picked up the pace and was even faster and funnier than the first, eliciting constant cheers from the audience. The showstopper was the finale with Mia Palencia teaching a rapt group of tourists how to curse and scold Malaysian style. As it did last year, Bodoh Lah (Do-Re-Mi from The Sound of Music), brought down the house.

The cast of Broadway Parodies Lagi-Lah was so splendid, I could single out each and every one of them for praise. Three, however, deserve special mention:

Sham Sunder Binwani merely had to step onto the stage or open his mouth to have the audience roaring with laughter. Young Mia Palencia, whose voice is more powerful and who has more stage charisma than professional performers twice her age, took over and improved on some of the show’s best numbers. Finally, the comedic talent of Tria Aziz (of reality show Audition) got some of the night’s loudest laughs and applause with several songs as a recently minted Datin doing her best to live up to her new title €“ with the help of multiple plastic surgeries and fashion accessories (her shoes are now all from “Guacci”).

Keep your eyes open for these three, as well as Yew, Shahila, Ho Soon Yoon, Glamorique Arshad, Tabitha Kong, Janet Lee, Sarah Low and Zeqhty Nattrah Ramli. If there is anyone here you haven’t heard of or seen before, hold onto your hats. You will certainly hear of them now.

Broadway Parodies Lagi Lah will be showing in Pentas 1 at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPAC) until Sept 28, with matinée on Sunday. Tickets are RM60, RM40 and RM20 (students) - family and group discounts are available. Its national tour kicks off in October, entertaining audiences in Ipoh, Penang, Johor Baru and Kota Kinabalu. For details, call KLPAC at 03-40479000 or visit www.klpac.com.my.

Hello Pentas 1, KLPAC!

There are also panels being built which reach as high as the ceiling.

Show Business

Missed the candle light vigil for Teresa and was up the whole of last night catching up reading political news. News depresses me most of the time but lately it's hitting a new low. For whatever hidden agenda these politicians are trying to push, I hope they come to their conscience one day, if there is any left, that their actions act like lethal dosage dripping into the veins of our nation. I wish they had a heart, I wish that day would come sooner, or before the country and its people have been shredded to pieces beyond recovery.

My iTunes were playing softly at the background and this song caught my attention...
I turned up the volume and listened to the lyrics. Hence,
There's No Business Like Show Business from Annie Get Your Gun
by Irving Berlin
The costumes, the scenery, the makeup, the props
The audience that lifts you when you're down
The headaches, the heartaches, the backaches, the flops
The sheriff who escorts you out of town
The opening when your heart beats like a drum
The closing when the customers won't come

There's no business like show business
Like no business I know
Everything about it is appealing
Everything the traffic will allow
No where could you have that happy feeling
When you aren't stealing that extra bow

There's no people like show people
They smile when they are low
Yesterday they told you you would not go far
That night you opened and there you are
Next day on your dressing room they've hung a star
Let's go on with the show!
I remembered someone once asked, "What would you like to achieve in this production?" I wished she could ask me the same question again. This time I'd answer: Malaysia is a country with great food, beautiful people, rich cultural heritage, and it still is. If we could put up a good show to remind; or to get their mind off from all the political dramas... even just for a bare 2-hour show, that would be the least we can do.

It's impossible to turn back time, but it's possible to make it into action. Shall we?

So folks, let go the stress of the day (and come) to see the play.

Hugs,
Keith

p/s: Pardon my sales orientated sign off. We need audience, so please come ;)

NST Feature

There's a feature story of Ho Soon Yoon and Glamorique on New Straits Times' Life&Times date September 11.

Broadway Parodies Lagi Lah! is served up next week as the sequel to the hilarious Broadway Parodies Lah! DENNIS CHUA finds out what's being offered to tickle the funny bone this time around.

MUSIC lovers Ho Soon Yoon and Glamorique Arshad have always enjoyed Broadway hits.

In fact they grew up listening to songs such as At the End of the Day (from the play Les Miserables), The Candy Man (Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory), Good Morning Starshine (Hair), Sixteen Going On Seventeen (The Sound of Music), Cabaret, Oklahoma and Hello Dolly.

"Broadway is all about life, presented as musicals," said Ho. "When I watch a Broadway production, I benefit from the wisdom of the lyrics that composers like Rodgers and Hammerstein came up with years ago.

"Glamorique, or Glam as he is more popularly known, said: "Even by merely singing or listening to a Broadway song one can feel drawn towards the play. They're not only educational, but also timeless and magical. That's why I never tire of singing and dancing to their songs."
Ho, 30, from Kuala Lumpur, and Glam, 27, from Johor, will be performing in Broadway Parodies Lagi Lah! at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre in Sentul Park, Jalan Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur, from Sept 18 to 28.

A production of The Actors' Studio, it is the sequel to last year's Broadway Parodies Lah!.

Like its predecessor, Broadway Parodies Lagi Lah! is a rich rojak of Malaysian life, with a large helping of humour presented in a showcase of well-loved songs and dance numbers.

The lyrics have been spoofed to celebrate Malaysian mannerisms and icons.

Joining original team members Glam and Ho are jazz and folk star Mia Palencia, Tria, Tabitha Kong, Janet Lee, Sarah Low, Shahila Johan, Zeqhty Ramli, Sham Sunder Binwani and Keith Yew.

Choreographer Farah Sulaiman is back onboard, as are production designer Edna Tan and costume designer Dominique Devorsine.

As in the first outing, the show is created by Jason Cheong and Tan and written and directed by Brian McIntyre.

Datuk Faridah Merican and Joe Hasham are executive producer and artistic director respectively.

The hilarious songs, which spoof their Broadway originals include At the End of the Play (from At the End of the Day in Les Miserables), Chicken with the Chili on Top (Surrey with the Fringe in Oklahoma), The Roti Man (The Candy Man in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory), Good Morning Towels (Good Morning Starshine in Hair), Seventeen Going On Eighteen (Sixteen Going On Seventeen in The Sound Of Music), Karaoke (Cabaret), Damansara (Oklahoma) and Hello Datin (Hello Dolly).

A former bank customer service executive, Ho grew up singing with the Philharmonic Society of Selangor (The Phil) as lead singer and chorus member.

His notable performances included Music from Movies and Musicals, Rutter's Requiem and The Merry Widow Concert, all in the late 1990s.

The Phil's In the Mood in 2004 saw Ho debut as a conductor. Since then he has also conducted The Phil's choir for its annual Songfest competitions.

Ho has also sung at the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra's Laudus Organie in 2004 and was a featured soloist in the Malaysian Male Voices Choir that year.

Early this year, composer Nick Choo of Singapore chose Ho to perform in the International Sound of the Human World Buddhist Hymn Competition.Ho's recent musicals include Viva Voce II, Kam... In Your Face, DanSing Thru Broadway, Carmen, Turandot, M! The Opera, Butterfly Lovers, Tunku, The Musical, Rose, Rose I Love You and Broken Bridges, which earned him a nomination in the 2006 Boh Cameronian Arts Awards for Most Promising Artiste.

Ho also appeared on television in the ntv7 mini-series Saddiq & Co last year, and played Conrad in Bernard Chauly's Goda.

Besides singing, acting and conducting, Ho is a pianist, harmonica player and guitarist.

"I would love to compose songs or produce a play in the near future," he said, adding that his dream Broadway role was playing the Engineer in Miss Saigon as the character was "very complex and entertaining."

Glam, who is of Japanese-Javanese ancestry, is a performing arts graduate from the United Kingdom's Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford and the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts.

"The Liverpool Institute is owned by none other than former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney," he said.

The baritone singer and dancer also took vocal training under Siti Hajar Ismail of Akademi Fantasia fame and tap and jazz dance lessons under Farah. His debut in local musicals was in Stand and Deliver (1990) under the direction of Mervyn Peters.

In 2000, he starred in Farah's Dance Hysteria. Last year, he joined Ho in the ensemble of Tunku, The Musical and also sang back-up vocals in P. Ramlee — The Musical.

Glam also acted in the dark comedy Coming Out of the Closet with Livewire Theatre and The Two Brothers, a dramatic thriller which was part of KLPaC's May Platform this year.

In the recent Short and Sweet Festival, he won second prize for Best Actor for his portrayal of the Psychic in Love and Light.

Glam has just written his play Stuck, which will premiere in KLPaC next year. He is also a saxophonist, Latin percussionist and song composer.

His television credits include Malaysia's first English-language soap City of the Rich in 2004, and the on-going journalistic series Frontpage on ntv7.

"My favourite Broadway show is The Phantom of the Opera and I'm doing a hilarious spoof of its theme song called The Bomoh of the Bursa," he said.

Broadway Parodies Lagi Lah! will be staged at 8.30pm (Tuesdays to Saturdays) and 3pm (Sundays). Tickets are priced at RM60, RM40, RM20 (students), RM100 (family packages of four and an extra RM20 for any additional family member).

Broadway Parodies Press Conference Coverage On Star, September 7

Broadway hits, done Malaysian style

By TERENCE TOH

IT sounds like a marriage made in heaven: the soaring melodies of classic Broadway show tunes, combined with witty lyrics that both celebrate and spoof the intricacies of Malaysian life.

Imagine lyrics that tell of typical gatherings at the mamak stall set to the rambunctious music of the gangs meeting in West Side Story, for instance, or tales of the dire bus ride up to Genting Highlands sung to a tune from Les Misérables....

Such is the premise of Broadway Parodies Lagi Lah! (BPLL!), a fun-filled revue of comedic song and dance numbers adapted from the award-winning show Forbidden Broadway by American parodist Gerard Alessandrini.

The media preview of Broadway Parodies Lagi Lah! last week was an energetic, funfilled show of funny words and great music. – AZLINA ABDULLAH / The Star

BPLL! is a sequel to last year’s highly successful Broadway Parodies Lah, which performed to full houses in all of its 10 performances. As with last year’s production, BPLL! features lyrics written by Brian McIntyre, a co-founding member of Kuala Lumpur-based a cappella group Six2Eight.

Last year’s production of this show was McIntyre’s first stab at a musical, though he’s no newbie in the theatre scene, having appeared in productions such as A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, The Fantasticks, The Storyteller, The Mikado, and Stand Up and Deliver since the 1990s.

So what’s an Englishman doing writing about Malaysian life? Well, this particular Mat Salleh has been living here for almost two decades, which certainly means he’s well-versed in the idiosyncrasies and quirks of life in this colourful country.

And McIntyre brings a fond yet keen eye to bear on life here because he’s hit all the right spots. For one thing, he obviously knows all about the national love affair with food, as musical numbers relating to food are aplenty.

And then there’s I Could Have Played Golf All Day set to My Fair Lady’s I Could Have Danced All Night, while Hair’s Good Morning Starshine turns into (those ubiquitous!) Good Morning Towels.

While old favourites such as Bomoh of the Bursa and Damansara make a return, there are new songs as well, as this year’s production is being held on a “slightly bigger scale”, according to executive producer Datuk Faridah Merican, who explains that there’s a nationwide tour in the works this time.

After its mid-September run concludes in Kuala Lumpur, BPLL! will move on to Penang, Johor and Kota Kinabalu, among other cities, next month.

A bigger scale also means that little bit of extra pressure on this year’s cast, which includes both established and rising stars in the local performing arts scene: Glamorique Arshad and Ho Soon Yoon from last year’s production return and are joined by Janet Lee, Keith Yew, Mia Palencia, Sarah Low, Shahila Johan, Sham Sunder Binwani, Tabitha Kong, Tria, and Zeqhty Nattrah Ramli.

This diverse ensemble, all of whom have been involved previously in various local film and theatrical productions, came together at the end of March and have been rehearsing hard for months, an experience that Kong describes as “very exciting, an experience that always had something for us to look forward to”.

The Broadway-style choreography was, once again, created by Farah Sulaiman; and, also like last year, the ensemble will be accompanied by both live and computer sequenced musical backing.

> 'Broadway Parodies Lagi Lah' is on from Sept 18-28 at Pentas 1, KLPac (Jalan Strachan, off Jalan Ipoh, Sentul Park). Tickets are priced at RM60 and RM40, and at RM20 for students.

For more information, call 03-4047 9000, 03-2094 9400 or go to theactorsstudio.com.my. Details of the nationwide tour that will begin next month will be announced later.

The Audition of "Broadway Parodies Lagi Lah!"

As the sun sets at KLPAC, it was the last day for the audition of "Broadway Parodies Lagi Lah!"
It's been held since yesterday.
In spite of the Election Day, potential talents still turned up.
There are a lot of promising new talents being discovered and I would say, I'm overwhelmed to see so many fresh new talents.
Brian McIntyre, our Director, and Edna Tan, our Visual Consultant, were the official panel judges, while I was just a silent guess judge....hehehehehe (just sibuk-sibuk only)

We tried to make the audition the most relaxing one ever, even though most of the auditionees were nervous.
I know how it felt like to audition.
It's so nerve wrecking.

There has been some names being mentioned and short listed after the audition.
Now...the most heartbreaking part of it all.....
THE decision!!

Who will be the ones chosen to be recruited for "Broadway Parodies Lagi Lah"??
I am neither in a position to make the final decision nor announce the names.

All I can say is, from my point of view, I feel that it's going to be a wonderful show ahead in September.

So......tunggu (wait)

Sell off your seats if you're not coming :D

Hi everyone! First of all, thanks to everyone who has come to watch us. We've been having a wildly successful run, thanks to all of you! Once again, we're approaching the end of the run and like at the end of every run there is a feeling that it is strange to think that you won't be seeing these people again for a long time after spending night after night with them, eating, stretching, laughing.

But that's not the point. I just thought I would posit something to anyone who might feel relevant. Every night since the opening has been sold out. Extra chairs, floor seating, everything. However, there has not been a single night where there were no empty seats at all. I guess that what happened was that people bought their tickets and didn't turn up. If the tickets were merely booked they could have been sold off at the box office, but because they were paid for they could not be released.

Therefore, dear customers and patrons, perhaps if you have already bought tickets but cannot make it to watch, you could give your tickets to the box office to sell off. Then not only will the seat not be wasted (because evidently lots of people want to buy tickets but cannot), you will also be able to get your money back! You'll not have wasted your RM20 or 30 or 40 or whatever.

Win-win situation! There are two shows left.

Looking forward to meeting you there!

Cheryl

SOLD OUT!!

My God
I just can't believe it
our show sold out completely

On behalf of the BPL casts, I wanna say a million thanks to all who came to see our show
You made it great for all of us
Not only you enjoyed the show, but we also enjoyed entertaining all of you

God bless and peace y'all

I also wanna thank all my fellow casts, my comrades whom I'm working with in order to make this musical comedy show a major success....Soon Yoon, Ivan, Douglas, Doreen, Cheryl, Joanne, Sabrina and Kyra. It's been a wonderful show and great experience.

Not forgetting, Dato'Faridah Merican and Joe Hasham.

To all the crew, there's no musical show without your tireless effort and cooperation.

Last, to all those who came to see the show, thank you for all your support. Without an audience, no show is a success.
It's wonderful to see your big fat smile on your faces when you leave the show. It truly shows that, we, as performers have done our jobs well.

waaaaaaaaaaah

less than ten days to show! OH MY GOD!!!!

you know, time really seems to fly whenever you get involved in these things. seems like such a short time already although rehearsals are long and intense and long. then suddenly it's all over and like you have to part ways with the new buddies you make etc etc. oh well. someone once told me it's called post show blues.

it's been fascinating!! haha talking as if we don't have more long days of tech, bumping in etc. but yeah. it's always something new especially working with new people and new director and seeing how different people function, their methods etc etc.

WELL, actually i'm glad the run is starting. been a bit long since i was on stage already. haha. you know that itch? yeah.

BUY TICKETS! BUY BUY BUY BUY! apparently ticket sales are going pretty well, so get them quiiiiick!

...after much prodding from Elaine, am feeling a little guilty so thought I'd better write something pronto!

Glam! I echo SY's comments...that was very kind of you. I must also add to Glam's posting that personally I've got to thank everyone's patience when I 'collapse' either in laughter or from forgetting if I should move my right/left leg/not at all! - and I still have not worked out how to 'move the bottom half of my body without moving the top half!!'.... hmm 3 weeks...hmmm nerves

Yes yes..do come by the Attic on 9th May... it'll be a chance to get pre-show feedback!!

Three weeks to showtime?

Whoa...

Okay, so Elaine asked us all to contribute to the bloggie thing but I don't really know what to say. I recently stopped my day job so I don't do much with my time (yet) and my brain isn't functioning normally because I just stone all day long (and look at my lyrics, heh heh, that's for Brian).

Well, I have this sort of strange sense of humour, and I just got this good joke from my sister, so I'll share it with you.

"Hit me," said the masochist.
"No," said the sadist.

Yeah..I sort of need to get a life.

The Gig at The Attic is in about 9 days. Hope to see you all there!

There's more coming at'cha

Hello Everyone,

Thank you very much for taking your time to log onto our show's website.
There are gonna be more updates from time to time, do check it out.

So far, my experience with our rehearsals has been really good. It is also a great learning and exchange experience.

It's wonderful to work with a group of talented casts such as Soon Yoon, Doreen, Cheryl and Ivan (wow! when u guys sing...u SING!!) and not forgetting Joanne, Sabrina, Kyra & Douglas.

What's great is, i get to work and reunite with my dance teacher and mentor, Farah Dato'Sulaiman, our choreographer. (Girl, when you got it,...U got IT!)

As for our director, Brian McIntyre, whom I've worked with years ago, it's such a blessing to be under his direction. He's always open to new creative ideas.

Overall, I must say, I have the least amount of pressure doing this show.

Do come and watch us in action and we promise you a great evening of comedy, song and dance.
Guarantee best!!

Peace
Glamorique

An Interview With The BPL's Director Brian McIntyre.

Hello everyone,
I had a chance to interview the Director of "Broadway Parodies Lah!" Brian McIntyre about the musical.

Check out the interview below:

Me: What inspired you to write this musical?

Brian: Actually it all started with a trip to the dentist in late 2002. Long time dentist friend Jason Cheong, who has appeared in numerous stage productions, knew of my writing song spoofs from shows we had done with accapella group Six2Eight. In the USA, a group going out under the name "Forbidden Broadway" would spoof songs from the musicals. During a visit for a check up and filling by my long time musical collaborator Edna Tan, he wondered to her why someone couldn't do a similar thing in a Malaysian context. That sparked in me a list of possible spoof titles, and before I knew it a handful of songs had been written. About ninety percent of the songs were written across an eight week period whilst others came at various points over the subsequent four years. That was a real burn time for writing!

The show itself is a revue, so it's all songs with no story (unlike a musical which will have a plot and characters who develop throughout the show). Each of the songs looks to tell a story about some aspect or character that is quintessentially Malaysian. There's the Karaoke Datin Datin keeping surgically young, there's the Tai Tai wannabee looking to avoid the NS camp, there's a Manglish language teacher, there's the businessman wondering why the share price won't go up and what to do about it. There's songs about the uniquely Malaysian love of food, and the hazards (and delights) of business life. And naturally, the neighbours down south come in for some hantam. But it's all sought to be done in a spirit of good natured ribbing and fun. Don't take so serious one!

Me: What would you like to see being achieved though this musical?

Brian: Not really sure how to answer this one.... I got inspired to write the songs, they got written, friends who heard them said they liked them, and Joe and Faridah said let's get it on the stage because it's entertaining and should appeal to Malaysian audiences! So I guess the simple answer is that I'd like to see large audiences to reward the faith that everyone has shown for the show! We have been hugely blessed to have attracted the high calibre of talent that will be performing. To date, Douglas Lim (actor, comedian of Kopitiam and Broken Bridges fame), Joanne Kam Poh Poh (also Broken Bridges and veteran performer and comedienne), Doreen Tang (delightful voice! M! The Opera, In The Mood, many corporate shows), Ho Soon Yoon (actor, singer in Broken Bridges, conductor In The Mood), Sabrina Hassan (Anjung Budi, PGL), Kyra Dani (Each Other, Forum), Cheryl Tan (Six Characters), Glamorique Arshad (Mikado, Stand and Deliver, Jalan Impian) have signed on, along with a tremendous new stage and vocal talent Ivan Choong. We'll also have piano accompaniment from musician and vocal/choral coach Melvin Ho and additional music sequenced on the computer by me. It's pretty humbling when you have the confidence of Joe and Faridah of Actors Studio along with talent of such a tremendous standard coming forward and so keen to do the show. What I hope is that the audiences will feel entertained and the cast and crew enjoy their involvement in the show. That's achievement enough.

Me: To feed the curiosity of Malaysians, how would you describe Broadway Parodies Lah! in one sentence?

Brian: Reggie Lee and C W Kee's world cartoons set to Broadway tunes lah!

Hope you guys enjoy reading it! See you guys at The Actors Studio for "Broadway Parodies Lah!".
Thank you for supporting Malaysian Theatre!
